What has your journey at ABB looked like so far?
In search of a real corporate structure after several failed attempts, I began in Turkey as a Project Sales Engineer and later moved into Product Management and Technical & Design Promotion Manager roles. Each role taught me something new – from managing products and developing new markets according to our strategies and profitable products, to building strong relationships with consultants, architects, and authorities.
After more than a decade in Turkey, I made one of the most important and difficult moves of my career: relocating to Italy. My starting point was, “why shouldn’t I become the source or developer of the answers the market is looking for, rather than being a requester?”
Today, as a Global ELSP Learning and Technical Promotion Specialist, I support local technical promotion teams worldwide, create global specifications, and deliver training for colleagues remotely and face-to-face (f2f), as well as for customers and consultants visiting ABB locations. This transition from a local to a global role has been both challenging and rewarding, and it reflects how ABB encourages us to step outside our comfort zone and keep evolving.
What is important for you when it comes to leadership? What defines a true & thoughtful leader in your opinion?
For me, leadership is about trust, empathy, and strong communication. Not only being a manager for a team, but also leading yourself in tough situations, and being “the best mentor” among your team members and peers.
A thoughtful leader listens actively and supports the personal and professional growth of their team. As I have had a chance in my career to be a hiring manager, I believe giving freedom and space to try and make mistakes definitely helps with personal growth. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, but about creating an environment where people feel safe to share ideas, take initiative, and grow.
Who has had the biggest impact in your career at ABB?
I’ve been fortunate to learn from many inspiring managers and colleagues. In Turkey, my former managers encouraged me to take on new responsibilities. Those responsibilities were not always reflected in moving to a new position but in keeping the existing one. This helped me a lot to learn new things without always being promoted to a higher position.
In Italy, my new colleagues welcomed me with openness and collaboration, which made my transition smoother. The international atmosphere in the office and inclusiveness of diverse cultures has always helped me feel part of the global ABB family.
How are you impacting the career of your team members or colleagues?
I believe my role goes beyond technical expertise – it’s about sharing knowledge and empowering others. Through global training sessions, mentoring, and open collaboration, I aim to give colleagues the tools and confidence to succeed.
Even though I am not leading a team at the current moment, my leadership style has always been democratic, collaborative, and supportive. I encourage open communication, celebrate achievements, and motivate others to face challenges they are afraid of. At the end of the day, the biggest impact we can have is not only in what we achieve ourselves, but in how we help others grow and succeed alongside us.
